[Hamilton] or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Lin-Manuel Miranda

How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore
Get his own lyrical score?
A musical like you've never seen for sure.
I like to pretend but this has to end, sir.

So, Hamilton is a Broadway play that seems to be blowing up big, It's a hip hop musical adapted from a biography of Alexander Hamilton. This may sound like an odd pairing but Hamilton was a man who grew up poor, made himself via the power of his writing and as the show creator puts it "had beef with every founding father" back in the times when duels to the death over your honor were socially acceptable.

An album was made with the broadway cast and if you have a spotify account you can listen to it for free (although you may have to do it on a desktop because listening to it in order is definitely required, and I think mobile apps only let free users listen on shuffle):
Spotify
It's also free if you're an Amazon Prime member:
Amazon
Otherwise It's probably for sale in everyway/where music is sold now.

A helpful companion for listening is up on genius.com, it has full lyrics for each song along with who's singing them as well as annotations by the show creator and people on the internet full of facts. Each song has a header that will usually set the stage, give historical fact or insight about the structure of the song, maybe even all of the above.

Do you ever get just fucking furious for no discernible reason? Like, just a bunch of little things pile onto some bigger life frustrations and for reasons you can't articulate, all of a sudden you're in the blackest, most absolutely shit mood? I'm at work right now really trying to hold onto my shit, and for some reason I thought maybe a little commiseration might help.

What just fucking pisses you right off, SE++? What takes the jelly out of your donut, and how on earth to you get right with yourself so people don't think you're an unbridled maniac?

What's Tokusatsu?
Wikipedia wrote:
Tokusatsu (特撮) is a Japanese term that applies to any live-action film or television drama that features considerable use of special effects (tokusatsu literally translates as "special filming" in Japanese).

Tokusatsu entertainment often deals with science fiction, fantasy or horror, but movies and television shows in other genres can sometimes count as tokusatsu as well. The most popular types of tokusatsu include kaiju monster movies like the Godzilla and Gamera film series; superhero TV serials such as the Kamen Rider and Metal Hero series; and mecha dramas like Giant Robo. Some tokusatsu television programs combine several of these subgenres, for example the Ultraman and Super Sentai series. Tokusatsu is one of the most popular forms of Japanese entertainment, but most tokusatsu movies and television programs are not widely known outside Asia.

nthQcnS.jpg

So this is tokuastsu.

Dv5ub.jpg

And this is tokuastsu.

jlITJAU.jpg

Even this is tokuastsu.

vtMcbXo.jpg

However, this is what most fans know today as tokuastsu or just 'toku' for short; Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and Metal Heroes.

gPKVI.jpg

Kamen Rider started out first in 1971 and the group of shows lasting from that time till 1989 (the heroes from then referred to as the Showa Riders) mostly involved regular guys getting turned into cyborgs due to evil COBRA-esque organizations hellbent on taking over the world. Only the Riders with their super-charged motorcycles could stop them and the various monsters of the week from getting their way. In 2000, Kamen Rider began anew. Unlike the Showa Riders, these 'Heisei Riders' had pretty much no connection to each other and only met in non-canon material. They still kept the trait however of their powers (non-cybernetic this time) having connections to the very evil they were trying to face. This lasted until about 2009 in which the movies of the series Kamen Rider Decade began to connect both eras together canonically and the following shows afterwards (dubbed by some as the 'neo-Heisei' era) can be said to share the same universe, something promoted by the Movie Wars crossover films.

JFbt3xo.png

The current series at the moment is Kamen Rider Ghost. The titular Kamen Rider this time around is Takeru Tenkuji, a young man whose father was a famous ghost hunter who was killed mysteriously ten years back. On the same day that people in the same district of his family's temple are attacked by unseen assailants, Takeru receives a mysterious object sent to him by his father prior to his death, an eye-shaped item called an Eyecon.

MKs82SM.jpg

As it turns out, the attacks are connected to the Eyecon, caused by ghost-like creatures called the Ganma who were sent to find it and take out anyone in the way. The Ganma can only be seen if someone has an Eyecon, so Takeru leads the Ganma away from his friends at the temple, determined to fight them off.

tZJWgve.jpg

And promptly gets killed.

NnIi9hB.jpg

Of course this would be a pretty short series if things ended there. Takeru thus meets a mysterious man in a space beyond the mortal coil who grants him the ability to become a spiritual Kamen Rider once Takeru shows he has a knack to connect with the Eyecons. This power gives Takeru a second chance at life, one he can use to not only fight off the Ganma but also find Eyecons holding the spiritual essence of great historical figures. Not only will using them grant Takeru new abilities, but fifteen of them gathered together can grant him the power to have anything he wants.

hm1y3gN.jpg

Which is good since Takeru's second life is on a time limit. If he can't find fifteen great Eyecons in 99 days to wish himself back to proper life, he'll die permanently. And with the Ganma looking for them as well for unknown but probably dire reasons, Ghost has his work cut out for him.

CHg4g.jpg

The other major half of modern toku is Super Sentai, AKA the shows Power Rangers gets most of their fighting footage from. Starting in 1975 with Himitsu Sentai Goranger, the various shows within the franchise have grown to offer a more teamwork-based counterpart to the loner Kamen Rider with teams of three to five (with an extra teammate or two joining in later during the series) fighting in helmets and spandex against monsters sent from various evil powers seeking to conquer or destroy the planet, often having to fight the monsters twice as after it's initial defeat, it grows so the group can permanently defeat it with a giant mecha.

y4UR6jU.jpg

The current group in play at the moment is Shuriken Sentai Ninninger. The series follows a team made up of the grandchildren of Yoshitaka Igasaki AKA the Last Ninja. Decades ago, Yoshi fought off and sealed away Sengoku warlord-turned-demon Gengetsu Kibaoni when he and his demonic forces tried to prematurely return to conquer Japan. However, not all of Kibaoni's Youkai army was locked away with him. A remaining vassal, Kyuemon, steals the tool needed from the Igasaki household to free the army. Now Yoshi's grandchildren must put their lives on hold in order to strengthen their ninja skills and battle the Kibaoni Army Corps as the Shuriken Sentai who don't fight from the shadows, resealing Kibaoni himself before he grows too powerful.

eILyBk0.jpg

And if that's not enough reason to give the series a try, be aware that their Sixth Ranger is a Japanese man from America who transforms with a hamburger rather then a sword since his sword already doubles as his guitar. Oh, and his Zord rides around on a bison-themed ATV.

pVl8Qhw.jpg

If you remember VR Troopers or Big Bad Beetleborgs, then you've seen footage from the Metal Heroes franchise, the shows within tending to involve humans or aliens using metal armor to fight villains. While not as big as either Kamen Rider or Super Sentai, it's been making a comeback recently in the last few years based around the first Metal Heroes, the Space Sheriffs. The first, Space Sheriff Gavan, returned for a teamup with the Super Sentai group Gokaiger and then later in his own movie where he passed on the title to a younger heir. Now a pair of movies will be made to install new faces in the other two Space Sheriffs' boots, Sharivan and Shaider.

Is there any toku I may have missed? Feel free to talk about it here alongside what I've already mentioned as well as any American counterparts they have.

MUCHO KNOWLEDGE COURTESY OF @Knob
Knob wrote: »
Okay so: Tekken resources seem to be all aimed at people who either know nothing about fighting games, or people who already understand how tekken works. There's very little for people who get fg fundamentals but don't understand the specific flow of a tekken match. I'm going to attempt over the next couple days to demystify exactly what is going on to hopefully increase your enjoyment playing and watching the absolute most greatest and best 3d digital bear and robot karate simulator ever made

Archetypes: at a glance it seems like all tekken characters are doing the same things. In 2d games you have clear character roles like rushdown, zoner, grappler, etc. In tekken the lines are blurrier. Instead, there are a variety of elements that compose a complete tk gameplan, and each character is suited or unsuited to each one individually.

Poking: a character who excels at poking is the turtle of tekken. They have long ranged safe buttons with good tracking and are a nightmare to approach. They chop the tree down by inches. It is very hard to force a defensive poking character to move if they don't want to. Consider them to be the zoning characters. Alisa, Jack, and Miguel are all poking monsters.

Rushdown: a rushdown character wants to be in your face at range 0 all the time. Once they're inside, it is extremely difficult to get them back out. They have fast attacks with good advantage and generally can force 50/50s all day. Note that rushdown and poking are not mutually exclusive. Some characters have the tools for both. Some characters are crap at both. There are a lot of other areas to excel in. Nina is the undisputed Queen of Rushdown. Heihachi and Paul like it, too.

Block punishment: The ability to maximize damage from your opponent's mistakes. Each character has optimal punishes for every punishable situation. Some characters punish harder than others. You can hopkick Gigas all day and not be too worried about his retaliation. You have to think real hard before hopkicking Kazuya, because if he blocks, your ass just died twice. Kazuya Mishima is undisputed lord of punishment, getting full launches from blocking shit that other characters may struggle to get even a knockdown off.

Whiff punishing: some characters have better tools for handling whiffs than others. You can sit back and do silly shit in front of King or Nina all day. King has to be fairly close to tag you with b+1,2 and even if he gets it, its not the end of the world. Other characters are uniquely suited to fucking up your christmas if you're sloppy with your buttons. Asuka f+2 is the shining star here. Heihachi demon paw, all ewgfs, and like half of Jack's movelist are all also way up there.

Counterhitting: A character with a strong CH game aims to make you constantly second guess when it is your turn to push a button. They have tools to create natural frame traps and huge payoff from getting counterhits. Throw a dumb crouch jab against Shaheen? Not the end of the world. Got a little antsy against Steve? Welcome to the dumpster. Steve Fox and Asuka get most of their mileage from fishing for counterhits.

Wall carry: Some characters strengths lie in their ability to take you all the way to the wall from nearly anywhere on the stage. Having your back to the wall is extremely bad. Hitting the wall midcombo is extremely bad. Lee and Nina have legendary wall carry ability.

Movement: some characters just plain move better than others. Big characters arent neccesarily slow, but their bulk means they arent creating as much safe space with a sidestep or backdash. Small characters create more distance as there is less of them to hit. Unique evasive stances could also be included in this category. Xiaoyu and Lili are extremely hard to pin down while Jack, Bob, and Gigas have to take more pressure due to having poor mobility. Eddy is a special case, having the very evasive RLX stance but an awful neutral stance and terrible sidestep.

Okizeme: getting off the ground in tekken is a generally scary prospect, but some characters will fuck you up harder than others. You can kinda just do whatever you want against Lucky Chloe and it'll probably work out. Get knocked down against King or Xiaoyu? RIP. Your ass is now in a blender.

So when discussing how a tekken character works, they'll generally excel at a couple of those categories while being deficient in others, or occasionally being adequate at everything without being phenomenal, like Jin.

Kazuya has shit poking, mediocre rushdown, outstanding block and whiff punishment, decent CH, fair wall carry, and great movement and oki. He is a decensive character designed to force and capitalize on mistakes.

Alisa is the other side of the defense coin, with has outstanding poking, below average rushdown, shit block and whiff punishment, average CH game, good carry, and amazing movement. She sets her position on screen at will and defends it with an array of amazing coverage. She's O.Sagat or Deadshot. You lose 80% of your lifebar trying to touch her.

Those are extreme examples with most characters being a blend of the above qualities and very few examples of stark archetypes.

Do any of the characters in T7 have a counter? As in Dudley/Gouken/Baiken/Kolin style counters.

Lots. Asuka, Paul, Nina, King, Jin, Law kinda, Feng kinda, Heihachi kinda. Probably tons more i am forgetting.

Tekken has a system called Chickening, however. If you expect one of your pokes to get countered, you can input a command to reverse their counter. The game will yell CHICKEN due to a hilarious tekken 3 glitch that became a running joke, and you will feel bad for using a counter against a good player.

E: actually i dont know if t7 has chickening. I'm assuming so because its been a staple since tekken 3, but i havent seen anyone do it in t7

tell me about bryan and why he is the best

Just like Dragunov, he's amazing at both poking and rushdown. He's got safe launchers, great whiff punishing, big damage, great lows. He can play keepout until you're scared to advance then come in with low risk, high reward mixups. His offense is a little hard to sustain since he's not great at creating + frames, but he doesnt need to smother you like hwoarang or nina. 1 opening is generally enough. His main fault is his linearity. Good lateral movement shuts down many of his options.

And that's without The Dumb Shit. Bryan has a taunt. It is unblockable. It does no damage, but causes enough hitstun for him to launch you for a full combo. It is insanely hard to do, and T7 has really toned down the opportunities for him to set it up, but its definitely a thing.

He also has Snake Edge. It's a low launcher that is insanely punishable and very easy to react to...unless you're on the internet. Prepare for a million Online Bryan Furys who have no deeper plan than to spam snake edge until you start preemptively ducking, at which point they will spam Orbital Heel.

@Knob

What archetypes are:

King
Jin
Gigas
Dragunov

And is there anyone that does combos like Marduk's VTS cancel combos from T6?

King is an oki monster. His punishment leaves a lot to be desired and his 50/50s are very high risk high reward. Hes very all in. His lows are all shit, because of his excellent throwing game, but keep in mind that throws are only as good as your opponent is since they're breakable on reaction.

If King is the offensive grappler, Gigas is the defensive one. No lows, best throws, great suite of punch normals, awful kicks. The space control of Jack with King's throw game. Horrible horrible movement and block punishing. Good opponents will outrun him all over the stage and break all of his throws, leaving you with a vaguely Jack shaped watery turd.

If Alisa is the defensive poking character, Dragunov is the offensive one. Running 2 and d+2 is a 50/50 from range 1-2 that lets him get inside nearly at will. He has the best tools to mount an offense of anyone in the game, an extremely easy to understand playstyle, high damage, maybe the best wall game, good panic buttons, great evasion. Downsides: ??? He's fucking great.

You may note that one Capcom is missing a character. Ryce states that they aren’t certain who this is yet, but that it may be Frank West.

Additionally, Rocket Raccoon is listed as “Rocket/Groot.” Regarding this, Ryce states that they aren’t sure if this means Groot just comes out during some of Rocket’s moves like an assist, or if he’s been redesigned and actually a duo character actually named Rocket/Groot.

Sunless Sea is a video game that leaves early access February 6th!

It is made by Fail Better Games who are the creators of Fallen London and Sunless Sea is set in that universe. I have no idea what Fallen London is I looked at the screenshots and its a browser story based game and from what I saw the story and port menus are taken from Fallen London.

That is tomorrow! Or you can purchase it now for $19.99 on steam. I'm betting there might be a smaller discount tomorrow.

So far I haven't played it a lot but it is very fun roguelike that feels like Sid Meier's Pirates? That is not a bad thing.

So far it is pretty fun. Kind of slow paced and although I've only died once and this second attempt is much better anything terrible can and will always happen. The game is normally played with one-auto save style but you can enable save slots in "merciful mode" this removes an idol from your inventory which I don't know what it does probably achievement or end game side story related?

You do get to carry on a tiny itty bit of previous stats or something from your previous character when you die though.

The game I feel really excels at a giving you events and material and you fill in the gaps and really make a story and adventure for your self.

Good fun game and it feels really polished I could possibly have low standards but so far I'm impressed.

Dead by Daylight is a 1v4 game where one killer (currently there is a Leatherface, a Jason, and some weird fuckin dude who can ring a scary bell to become invisible) tries to kill four survivors before they can start up five engines to open the escape door. It's in Early Access on Steam and is 18 bucks right now.

Four friends and I all just picked this up, and it is a fucking blast to play. Being a survivor is terrifying, the killer projects a field of view as spooky red mist and anytime he's near you hear a swelling heartbeat. It seems to run very well and looks appropriately spooky.

If a few people get the game, playing as a 5 man group is definitely the way to do it.

Cooking: Welcome Back to the Good Food Thread.

0
0
K2n8EYK.gif

What is cooking? Technically, cooking is just the application of heat to food, so it can apply to something like toasting poptarts. But c'mon: when we think of cooking, we consider the actual preparation of food using separate ingredients, mixing it all together, and making it delicious with heat. In modern times, it's become something of a lost art as the industrial revolution and modern chemistry have allowed the mass production and preservation of food to keep our kitchens stocked with a variety of near labor-free meals. But you can bring it back: generations cooked before you, and with less access to the technology and science behind cooking.

But why cook? Well, cooking yourself has several advantages over buying prefab meals. Such as...

NcS1fHE.pngFrugality: in general, homemade is cheaper than store bought since you're providing the labor. This especially applies to restaurant or fast food places, where speed comes at a premium.
NcS1fHE.pngFlexibility: If you buy a frozen pepperoni pizza, you're kinda stuck with that barring some alterations. If you want to change up the dough or maybe a different cheese or cut back on the sodium. By making it yourself, you have more control over every step of the process, and as you learn the different flavors of spices you can what you're in the mood for every time.
NcS1fHE.pngVariety: Going back to the pizza, if you buy one then you're stuck with it. At some point you gotta have pizza. But if you buy flour, cheese, tomato sauce, spices, and veggies, then suddenly you have a ton of options. Make your own spaghetti. Cut open that bell pepper and stuff it with cheese and spiced up sauce. By breaking it all down into basic elements, you have more control over your dining destiny.
NcS1fHE.pngVitality: We've all heard the scourge of PROCESSED FOODS and so forth, but let's set aside the cancer panic and all that. The simple fact is that keeping foods safe for consumption AND ensuring they get to the store before microscopic fiends chow down on them tends to come at a nutritional cost. Vitamins and nutrients are generally lost or degraded in the process, and that means less nutritional bang for your buck! Furthermore, you are in the driver's seat, going back to flexibility. Need to cut back on the salt? You can! Less sugar? No problem.
NcS1fHE.pngGustatory: Fresh ingredients tend to taste better! Not to mention the psychological effect of eating something you made, subtly influencing your opinion. Once again we head back to the flexibility bit: you're picking what you want to go in something, so it makes sense that it's going to taste better than ingredients dictated to you by some pizza factory in Iowa.

However, like all things in life, nothing is perfect. There are trade-offs, such as

MJeinaz.pngInvestment: Cooking can be cheaper, but the price is largely frontloaded. First, you need equipment to actually cook in and with, and then you have to buy ingredients. While ingredients can be cheap, it's way more economic to buy in bulk. This saves money in the long run, but it can certainly be a strain on the wallet in the short term.
MJeinaz.pngTime Management: One the things you're doing with cooking is providing the labor. This takes time, whether it be babysitting a stew or just waiting for an oven to preheat. Then there's the issue of cleaning up everything you've dirtied up afterwards. This can be mitigated through practice (learning how to juggle multiple meals at once, getting more efficient) and proper time management.
MJeinaz.pngDisappointment: You're going to fuck up a recipe at some point, and admittedly nothing takes the wind out of your sails then seeing all that time and money go down the drain.
MJeinaz.pngEndangerment: There are many laws and regulations to ensure that the food you eat is safe for consumption. By making your own food, you assume all risk for possible contamination. Then you have the equipment itself: heat, sharp objects, and volatile substances. Now the risk is not high if you take things slow and carefully, but there's also no risk of starting a fire when you order a pizza. Well...not normally.

But these downsides can be mitigated or even eliminated through proper planning and careful execution. In general, cooking is well worth the learning curve and both monetary and time investments. So let's learn to cook!

Seem daunting? Start simple. First, you'll need equipment. Here's a basic list...

Vessels
PcuyZVH.png Frying Pan: the classic. Non-stick or cast iron work fine, although cast iron has the flexibility of going into an oven. However you may have to work a bit harder to clean it. Both are optimal, but for now one is fine.
TfWyWjj.png Pot: just a moderately large container that will let you boil water. Ideally you'd want a sauce pan for, you know, sauces (and reducing thanks to the wider area) but a pot will do fine if you just stir and watch it.
s50fbcI.png Oven Pan: just a nice sheet pan, perhaps non-stick if you're so inclined, that will enable you to cook things like cookies, pizza, rolls, and so forth. If you get some foil, you can also cook up whole chickens if you don't mind the juices slopping around with the bird.
2t0OtlJ.png Roasting Pan: the proper way to cook meats in the oven, these typically also include a rack so the juices have somewhere to go. And a person can make use of those juices to flavor a salad or make a nice sauce if they desire.
HnbFn3M.png Plastic Containers: Ideally in a variety of sizes. Unless you intended to eat everything you cook on the same day.

Tools
L4cNSbW.png Chef's Knife: Find something comfortable and affordable. No sense dulling an expensive knife while you're learning.
xnJSw2s.png Spatula: For flippin and servin. Kind of essential.
NcS1fHE.png Wooden Spoon: for stirring, tasting, etc. Any spoon that's a poor conductor will work: wood is just the first that comes to mind.
JFg5leV.png Cutting Board: Come in wood and acrylic versions. The former is more resistant to accumulation of gunk (which breeds microbes) and the latter is easier to clean. You may want one of each: one for raw meats and one for everything else.
xLPRRNm.png Can Opener: Nothing fancy, just a standard hand-operated device will suffice.
zUJSV8a.png Grater: Preferably a multi-plane version, giving you more control over the size.
M58IZEo.png Dry Measuring Cups: You want cups with the measurement engraved. Trust me, my cheap Walmart cups with the measurements printed on have faded in like under a year.
q9xZdUS.png Measuring Spoons: Same as with cups, get the measurements etched in there.
JeyXGg5.png Liquid Measuring Cup: Printed on will probably fine here.
YCTA8gW.png Small Scale: Digital is best, especially with a tare option, but mechanical will suffice if you can't find a cheap one.
saq4KsO.png Strainer: Don't bother with pricey strainers that are super fine grain or whatever.
nhuICPT.png Whisk: Mix it up.

Safety
6wZVow6.png Fire Extinguisher: Class K is designed for kitchens, taking care of grease fires. This is probably overkill, as they are more designed for restaurants, and an ABC extinguisher should suffice unless you love frying and are ridiculously irresponsible about watching your oil temperatures.
e4cxKh8.png First Aid Kit: Nothing fancy; just something to handle cuts and burns.
ic4DE9r.png Oven Mitts: Unless you prefer to handle hot pots and pans with your bare hands.
oSRHGJy.png Thermometer: Instant-read digital sticks are cheap and will allow you to ensure stuff is heated properly. Intend to fry? You'll want a special deep fry/candy thermometer that clips to the pot.

This just the bare basics and may be missing some things. You'll know what you're missing as you learn and explore new venues. I left out electronic devices as they tend to be expensive, but a food processor, blender, and mixer This also doesn't include disposable things like foil, plastic wrap, bags, and so forth. Keep in mind that getting EVERYTHING at once isn't necessary, just slowly accumulate stuff as needed and you should be fine.

Tips for Getting Gear

Acquiring all this at once, from a store, will be prohibitively expensive for a lot of people. But there are some ways around this:
  • Relatives, especially older ones, tend to accumulate a bunch of cookware and will likely be more than eager to off-load stuff gathering dust in the garage or attic.
  • People moving. Again, the older the person the more likely they are to have more junk they want to be rid of, but it doesn't hurt to ask if there's anything they can't or don't want to carry with them.
  • Yard sales are great places to pick up basic stuff, as it can be harder to sell off things most households have. You can probably haggle down to fairly low prices.
  • Friends getting married. This seems weird, but in my experience people love nothing more than gifting newlyweds tons of kitchen hardware. You may be able to get duplicates cheaply if they don't return it or whatever, but more importantly you can probably get their old stuff for cheap (or free!) since they have like 10 fancy new pots to play with.
  • Local sellers, like Craigslist or in your local paper, can also have good deals and are generally more open to haggling. eBay is another option if you'd rather not personally interact with strangers from the internet.
  • Restaurant supply stores now have online shops, allowing you to buy stuff. These places tend to sell in bulk, so be careful that you don't order like a case of the same wooden spoon when you just need one. But it's one of the few places where you can get 45 lbs of peanut butter for nearly a buck a pound!
  • If you have a Costco or Sam's Club membership, these places make money more off subscriptions than products. What this means is that there's very little markup on cookware, so they'll be cheaper than places like Walmart.

I'd avoid specialty stores in malls and such, as they tend to mark up the price in exchange for the "convenience" of having everything in one place. But shop around and don't be afraid to check them out for deals. Also, keep in mind that used stuff will be of less quality, but for learning it's best to have cheap equipment to mess up rather than buying some three-figure cookware set and wrecking that.

Basic Stock

These are items with long shelf lives (at least a year) that you can comfortably buy in large quantities and not worry as much. Just, you know, use it.
Flour: All-purpose and bread are good starting flours. Avoid gluten-free flours, the only exception is if you have a medical condition. Gluten is not going to kill you, and it makes dough good.
Yeast: Instant doesn't require blooming and can just be tossed into the dough mix. Packages are a cheap way to experiment, but bulk is the way to go.
Kosher Salt: If you have a food processor you could blast it down to finer grains if you desire if sprinkling on stuff, but this is the salt of choice for cooking due to the larger grain size.
Sugar: Keep it sweet and simple.
Peppercorns: The flavor is much more potent when freshly ground, so buy a grinder and corns, or just one of the plastic things that include a grinder if you're lazy.
Rice: Keeps forever and is a staple in many recipes. Brown rices are better for you, and you may want a variety of grain sizes for different recipes. Buy in bulk.
Beans: Like rice, they have long shelf life and go in a lot of stuff. You may want to experiment by buying like one-pound bags of varying types to see what you like. However, bulk is cheaper!
Spices: Thyme, basil, cumin, etc. etc. These add a lot of flavor to dishes, and they're your secret ingredient.
Harder Cheeses: Stuff like Parmesan cheese will keep in the fridge for a while. Wrap it up in plastic wrap and rewrap as soon as you're done grating to maximize lifespan. Softer cheeses, like mozzarella, aren't nearly as long-lived so be careful how much you buy at once.
Oils: Extra virgin olive oil is one of the staples, but other grades of olive oil have their uses. Peanut is another good one for the general flavor, and I keep a big ol' jug of soybean oil (what most generic vegetable oils are) for general use like experimenting with deep frying. Note that you can recycle oils a few times by running them through a filter like a cheesecloth if you're deep frying a lot.

Cool Cooks to Watch

The easiest way to learn to cook is by watching professionals. Just look up very basic dishes on YouTube or Google and you have a jumping point.

Mario Batali: Let's start this off with a fat Italian chef. Batali is cool, his show is cool, but Food Network needed reality show so all you got are reruns now. You can find clips of Molto Mario on YouTube, so check him out.
Anthony Bourdain: One of those kinda blunt "rude" chefs, I guess, but No Reservations is a great show if only if the wider, international scope and is just fun to watch. Also he hates the fuck out of Rachel Ray which is a large plus in my book.
Alton Brown: His show Good Eats is, without a doubt, one of the best cooking shows ever made. You won't just learn technique, but also the very chemistry that goes into cooking. Watching enough of this show will teach why certain ingredients and methods are employed, and these fundamentals go a long way to allowing you to freestyle your own recipes. Just stay away from Cutthroat Kitchen.
Gennaro Contaldo: Only started watching this guy, but he's like an awesome Italian uncle that just loves the fuck out of cooking. His enthusiasm is infectious, and he's got videos on YouTube.
Julia Child: Old-school French chef, adored around the world. No longer among the living, but her cookbooks and videos on YouTube will provide you tons of information.
Jacques Pépin: Another French chef that is loved by many. He even had a show with Child for a period. Dude just loves cooking, and like Child has lots of videos on YouTube.

So talk cooking! Talk about your latest victories or crushing failures. Get assistance from others! Go ahead and post pictures of your food. Unlike Facebook, we won't judge you...unless it looks bad.

[Game of Thrones] has been on our television screens since 2011

What a time 2011 was! The Playboy Club aired for three episodes and was promptly forgotten. Piers Morgan's terrible CNN show made it's terrible debut. And all of the Westerosi kids still looked like kids! What a time to be alive.

Let us reminisce about these Salad Days. What are your favorite season one scenes? Here are some suggestions!

[Digital Card Games] – You can play Gwent now

CARD GAMES! They're popular. They're hip. Some of them are on your computer, some of them are on your tablet or phone. Some of them promise that one day they're totally going to be on console, but we'll believe that when we see it. This is a thread for discussing the many card games on the market, so as to make it easier to shit on the ones we're bad at we don't like.

Most digital card games have a pretty simple economy: By playing games and completing quests, you earn a F2P currency, which you can spend on booster packs or a secondary mode in which you make a deck out of random cards and compete with other people. Then you can destroy extra copies of cards in order to make a crafting currency, which you use to get cards you don't have, since this isn't a physical game and you can't just buy it from a store.

Hearthstone
image

This thread wouldn't exist without Hearthstone. Like it or not, Blizzard's achieved success beyond their expectations and brought the genre to the forefront of public attention. Every game in this list learns something from Hearthstone, whether it's presentation, economy, marketing, or mechanics.

It's unlikely you're reading this thread and don't know what Hearthstone is, but just in case: In Hearthstone you play as one of 9 Classes, each of whom has access to neutral cards and their exclusive class cards. Creatures attack the target you tell them to attack, there are no actions (other than secrets) on your opponent's turn.

There's an expansion coming out for Hearthstone this week, on December 1st. It has several expansions out already, and a rotating Standard format. The next rotation will be sometime next year.

Duelyst
image

Full disclosure: Duelyst is probably my favourite digital card game at the moment. Unlike most other card games, Duelyst takes place on a game board more akin to a tactics or miniatures game than a card game. Creatures becomes units that you can move around the board, and your own character is represented as well – if your opponent can't reach you, they can't hurt you. In Duelyst you can play as one of 6 factions, each of which has two playable characters within it who have access to a unique spell only they can cast. It makes good use of its board, featuring cards that attack in an area of effect, cards that attack from a range, and cards that have bonus movement.

Duelyst has, for the most part, the most competitive starter decks for the new player experience. Not all of them, the Songhai deck has some cards that are fucking trash without the proper synergy. But for the most part you should be able to take a starter deck with all the cards unlocked and take it reasonably far in ranked as long as you understand card and tactics game concepts like positioning, card advantage, and so on. Duelyst also has the unique mechanic where each turn you can mulligan a card from your hand and draw a new one, shoring up shaky hands.

I want to stress again that I personally really like Duelyst, and a huge part of that is I can see how I'm fucking up. I'm constantly able to look at a turn once I'm done and say “oh I should have moved to that square instead, oh I should have attacked with this instead of that” and that ability to feel conscious of what's to be improved on is really satisfying. Plus the tactics gameplay is just fun and unique on the market.

Duelyst has one expansion so far, and they said they wanted to get one more out this year, but it's almost December and we haven't heard any details about it so I wouldn't hold your breath.

Elder Scrolls Legends
image

Elder Scrolls Legends is the sequel to the hit physics playground Elder Scrolls 5: Bad Rats. I haven't played it much because to be honest the elder scrolls aesthetic is wildly boring to me. In ESL you have two separate lanes that you can play your creatures in, and you can only attack or block creatures in the same lane. In addition, one of the lanes gives creatures stealth for what I can presume are gameplay reasons, but feel kind of arbitrary when you're just looking at this random generic board. In addition, when you go down to 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 health for the first time you get to draw a card, and some cards allow you to play them on the opponent's turn when drawn in this way.

It seems fine? I don't like enough to include it in my stable of games being played, but it's probably worth a try if you're interested in these games. Though I'll probably give it another try now that I'm making this thread just to feel confident about that decision, and to flesh out this entry a bit later. I mean I haven't even told you how many classes/colours/whatever card separation there are. Seems unfair.

Shadowverse
image

Let me get something out of the way immediately here: Shadowverse is anime. And I don't mean anime in the haha so wacky FLCL or the cool guy Cowboy Bebop ways, I mean anime in the “images that will get you jailed on the Penny-Arcade forums” way. Many, myself included, will find that aesthetic pretty hard to get over, and it's pretty understandable if you never do.

But to its credit, the people designing the actual gameplay of Shadowverse are competent and qualified. The six factions available all have very different strategies and mechanics available to them. One gets a discount on cards at the cost of them coming into play on later turns, while another generates cheap tokens to use with cards that care about how many cards you've played that turn. Both players get a limited number of “evolutions” each game – stat boosts that also enable a creature to attack another creature the turn they're played. This creates these tense tempo turns where you're constantly figuring out when the best time to use them is, and keeps low-level starter deck play relatively interesting.

Shadowverse has one expansion.

Eternal
image

Eternal is the newest digital card game to go into open beta, and it seems alright! Unlike most of the other games on this list Eternal has aggressively tried to get much closer to Magic the Gathering, including a combat phase where you declare attackers and the opponent decides how they're blocked, and land. Right now it seems like an ideal mix of Hearthstone's readability and Magic's complexity, but time will tell if that turns out to be true.

One credit I give Eternal is that it seems to have a strong set of single player options available, and seems to give you a new two colour starter deck every week? Which on one hand is a bit slow, but on the other hand, is more than you get from most games. I like the mechanic where a creature attacks and then it buffs the next creature that you draw, except you're attacking with like 4 of them, so then you slam down a 2 drop except it has +4/+4 and you're like WHAT UP MOTHERFUCKER.

Oh if you want to make decks, go into the options and turn on Advanced Deckbuilding. The game won't let you put in non-generic land if you don't click that, which is a PRETTY IMPORTANT PART of building a deck.

Gwent

Gwent's in closed beta! I'm not in closed beta. I'm not gonna talk about it.

Hex
This is apparently still going strong! I haven't played it. I probably shouldn't have kickstarted it.

Faeria
I know this exists. I am pretty sure it is a commercial failure.

No questionable art/stories/shipping/etc. We do not condone any sexualizing of the characters. Yes, we know The Internet does it. The Internet does that with everything. If people want to prejudge here based on there, that's their issue, but this thread is to be devoid of such content.

No linking to full episodes, with the exception of The Hub's website which has an episode or two plus a bunch of clips. The full series (including new episodes as they air) is available on iTunes. Season One is on DVD as well as Season Two, Season Three and Season Four. If you're not in a country where they offer it there, pester them until they do, I guess. Oh yeah, seasons one, two, three and four are now available to stream at Netflix. There is also a pony movie which most people thought was alright. It's on DVD and Blu-Ray if that's your thing. There's even a better sequel to that movie on DVD and Blu-Ray. Both can also be viewed on Netflix.

Transfomers: Vote for next Prime Round 2 is up!

0
0
So Hasbro is having a pretty interesting fan vote right now. (Prior fan votes brought us the new character Windblade, the new female combiner Victorion, and an upcoming Trypticon toy) Basically fans will vote out of 9 preselected characters on which one will be chosen by the Matrix of Leadership to become the next Prime and leader of Cybertron; this will affect the Generations toyline, the excellent IDW comics and the in production machinima series. The interesting thing here is the lack of the obvious choices (Optimus, Hot Rod/Rodimus, Bumblebee, Starscream (Long Story)) in addition to some super esoteric choices.

power-of-the-primes-poster.jpg

Let's go over the candidates

Ultra Magnus: Autobot Commander, perennial second-in-command and all-around stick-in-the-mud, Magnus is no stranger to leadership, but he prefers the life of a soldier; following someone else's orders or working alone. He'd rather be the one to make the sacrifice play than order someone else to.

Hound: Autobot Scout and Tracker, Hound finds himself more at home on squishy human Earth than the cold metal planet of Cybertron. He's also the only 1984 Autobot to make the list, which is a bit unusual as one would expect more prominent characters like Prowl or Jazz to be on the list before him.

Arcee: Arcee has been everything from from a Autobot warrior, to a brooding assassin for the Wreckers, and even a vengeful berserker with her own agenda. But no matter what, she's an incredibly capable soldier, skilled in both hand-to-hand combat and an expert sharpshooter. She wouldn't be the first female Prime, but she'd be joining the ranks of a very distinguished few.

Shockwave: Decepticon Commander, Shockwave is ruled by logic. Logic dictated he join Decepticons, either because their philosophy makes more sense to him, or because they're the quickest means to accomplish Shockwave's goals. Logic has, in the past, lead him to heights such as usurping control of the Decepticons, but it has also be used to force him to abandon the position, and he's shown to have difficulty processing the illogical.

Megatron: Supreme Commander of the Decepticons and the most notorious Transformers to ever live. Believing it to be Cybertron's destiny to conquer the galaxy, Megatron has lead the Decepticon war-machine for millions of years, nearly achieving ultimate victory on numerous occasions, though either through the persistence of his enemies, the treachery of his subordinates, or just plain overconfidence, he routinely fails to accomplish his goals. Also, in the IDW comics
He recently abandoned the Decepticon cause and is now working with the Autobots in the name of peace.

Star Saber: Supreme Commander of the Autobots some time after the era of Optimus and Rodimus, Star Saber is a being of extreme conviction. Frequently known as a champion of justice and defender of the defenseless, Star Saber is unyielding in battle against those who stand with Evil. This conviction has occasionally been shown to have a dark side, as Saber's mission can become a zero-tolerance crusade of religious signifiance.

Thunderwing: Decepticon Espionage Agent, Thunderwing is also an incredibly powerful warrior in his own right. He's known to be an exceptional leader, uncharacteristically concerned with the welfare of his underlings. However, he is prone to delusions of grandeur and obsessive tendencies. Thunderwing has more than once pursued his goals to the ruination of everyone around him.

Unknown Evil: The shilloutte appears to be Deathsaurus, the main villain and leader of the Destrons in Transfomers Victory. Deathsaurus was the Decepticon Emperor of Destruction, ruling during the same era as Star Saber. A consummate Decepticon, powerful, cruel and savage. Despite his power, Deathsaurus often avoids direct intervention when possible, delegating to his subordinates, even indulging them in the schemes and backstabbing that comes from the increased autonomy.

Optimus Primal: Maximal Star Captain, Optimus Primal is a young, down-to-earth leader despite being in war he wasn't expecting. Primal strongly believes in Maximal honor and justice, but isn't above bending the rules when the situation requires it. Primal is not revered by his subordinates in the way his namesake was, but his determination and leadership can quickly earn the respect of even his enemies.

Anywho, there's also a movie coming out, which looks about on par with previous movies. Although if they actually address why so much cybertronian crap somehow makes it way to Earth time and time again, I will be pleased.
