If you're a Transformers fan and/or you like comics, today is a good day to be a fan of either or both.

James Roberts: Author of More Than Meets the Eye, co-author of Last Stand of the Wreckers. MTMTE is a fun action comic book with thrills, action, suspense, horror, and loads of humor. Rodimus Prime leads a crew of about 200 autobots (and Cyclonus) to look for the legendary Knights of Cybertron. Highly recommended.

John Barber: Author of Robots in Disguise, editor of the Transformers comics. RID is filled with intrigue and mystery, and it's generally darker. It's about Bumblebee's struggle to unify a newly primordial Cybertron and its inhabitants- neutrals who've been gone for years, the Autobots who've won the war, and the Decepticons who've lost and are treated like second class citizens. Also recommended.

Nick Roche- Artist/co-writer of Last Stand of the Wreckers, occasional artist on More Than Meets the Eye, working on a spotlight miniseries of some sorts due out next year. Pretty much my favorite artist who's worked on the franchise, doesn't always do cartoony work but goshdarn if his exaggerated style doesn't work.
If you want to start reading Transformers comics, look for The Death of Optimus Prime, available on Comixology and in the first trade paperback of More Than Meets the Eye. there's older comics but really you don't need to read those. Just check out the tfwiki if there's anything that confuses you, which should hardly be anything at all.

they get toys too
there's gonna be two more of the darn things, so hope you're not already sick of 'em
apparently the main characters for 4 and 5 are a high school girl and her texan car nut boyfriend

Just because the Autobots and Decepticons were mechanical, just because they could be taken apart and reassembled, the uninitiated assumed that there was no scope in the realm of technomedical science for mystery. But there was a reason why the likes of Ratchet and Fixit and Pharma and Kaput called themselves doctors rather than mechanics and engineers, and that reason could be found buried in the chest of every Cybertronian. The Spark - regarded by the Higher Races as a bona fide miracle phenomena - transformed a mechanical body from a rough rectangle of moving parts into something more. Something far less predictable. Sentience, it seemed, complicated everything.

It would've been cool to have timed the elections on Cybertron with the elections in the U.S., but I think that would've created some false parallels.
The basic idea is that Bumblebee is an honest 'bot who has people's best interests at heart, but he's realizing that good intentions aren't going to get things done. His big political rivals are a little more of a question mark — or, a pair of question marks. Starscream has always been a schemer, but he seems to be playing by the rules now... still, has he turned over a new leaf for real? And the other big political rival is Metalhawk, who came in as the representative on the unaligned Cybertronians — 'bots who are neither Autobot nor Decepticon.
